Kevin Fitchard
For the last few years, an alternate wireless network has been emerging in the U.S.: one not built by the mobile operators but by cable providers. Cablevision, Time Warner Cable, and Comcast have all launched numerous Wi-Fi hotspots in their service areas. Meg James
Sports rights fees and costs for original shows have driven up cable programming expenses in recent years. Yet cable channels remain the most profitable divisions of many media conglomerates. Wall Street worries the media industry will be unable to sustain its high margins.

Verizon's Spectrum Deal with Cable Is the End of Broadband Competition

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
The spectrum deal Verizon signed with Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, in which the nation's largest wireless operator would buy the unused airwaves from the nation's top cable providers, signals the moment that the consumer benefits of the convergence of voice, video and data hit the wall. It's a deal that’s great for Verizon, an acknowledgment of reality for the cable folks and a bummer for AT&T and consumers.

Ryan Lawler
A weak economy is putting pressure on the pay TV industry, as it struggles to get new users to sign up for cable, IPTV and satellite services. But the short-term issue around the affordability of cable is hiding a bigger trend of young people who are choosing not to pay for TV.

Competition and a Weak Economy Plague Cable TV

Marguerite Reardon
Cable operators all over the country have been steadily and slowly losing TV subscribers quarter after quarter. A year ago, some people wondered if Internet TV services like Netflix and Hulu were attracting so-called cord cutters. Instead is may be that increased competition from satellite and phone companies offering TV service is the main reason that cable operators are losing TV subscribers. But the sluggish economy is also contributing to the malaise.
