The FCC Needs More Fixes, Fewer Excuses for the National Broadband Map

Sacha Meinrath
Our critique of the National Broadband Map, "Map to Nowhere," has caused quite a stir over at the FCC and the National Telecom and Information Administration. Yet the response from Steven Rosenberg, chief data officer with the FCC's Wireline Competition Bureau, offers PR spin and damage control rather than substantive ideas.

Benjamin Lennett and Sascha Meinrath
The FCC has now failed twice at producing good broadband data. It's time to give someone else a try.

Interactive Map of Internet Access Released

Full article: Nextgov
Josh Smith
Federal officials released their interactive online map of Internet access around the country, promising to provide new ammunition to all sides in the debate over national broadband deployment. Users can view such details as wireless speeds, the types of service available, and other key information, from the national level down to census blocks. But some consumer groups are already blasting the map for leaving out pricing information -- an omission that the advocacy organization Free Press said was beyond NTIA's control and "driven by politics."

New Broadband Map Has Flaws

Full article: San Jose Mercury News
Troy Wolverton
The federal government last week finally released a national map of broadband services, but it leaves a lot to be desired. It's helpful to be able to see on a map which areas of the country and your area can get high-speed cable Internet access. It's also neat to be able to type in your address or ZIP code and see which companies offer wireless Internet access there. But it's frustrating to see that after two years of work, some of the information is incomplete, incorrect or out of date. area.

NTIA, FCC Release National Broadband Map

Kenneth Corbin
The federal government's top communications officials have devoted much of their attention over the last couple years to tackling what is often called the digital divide. But hard data about the extent of the problem has been elusive. Now the feds are weighing in, releasing the first nationwide map of broadband availability, a joint effort of the Department of Commerce and the FCC.

Free Press Praises NTIA, Urges FCC to Collect Missing Data

Full article: Free Press
The NTIA released a National Broadband Map that offers perhaps the first comprehensive picture of broadband deployment in America. The new map provides a long overdue picture of broadband availability in the United States. However, there are some shortcomings in the map beyond the agency's control and driven by politics. The FCC should pick up where the NTIA left off and to use its authority to compel ISPs to report basic, granular pricing and availability data.

Sara Jerome
A new map developed by the Commerce Department "validates" broadband stimulus spending that House Republicans have criticized as wasteful and misused, Commerce Department officials said. The head of NTIA's telecom arm, Lawrence Strickling, said that the map lends credence to the broadband grants the Commerce Department doled out across the country
