Media Minutes: October 7, 2011

After three weeks of the Occupy Wall Street protests, the establishment media are beginning to pick up the story. But increased airtime doesn’t necessarily equal quality reporting. And a new paper says that Net Neutrality generates economic benefits for consumers — as much as $5,600 per user, per year.

Eight Ways the FCC Can Help Fuel Broadband Deployment

Full article: Connected Planet
Joan Engebretson
When the FCC created a technical advisory committee last fall, it charged the committee with coming up with recommendations to enhance innovation, create jobs and increase competition that the commission could put in place without requiring a rulemaking. The committee has released what it calls a "mid-term report."

Google Fiber and Creating the Next Generation ISP

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
With its plans to bring gigabit broadband to Kansas City, Kansas, Google is changing the fate of that city, but it's also setting out to build a new generation of Internet Service Provider, one designed for the type of world where connectivity drives innovation, and is an irrefutable aspect of our lives. The goal is nothing short of causing a revolution -- a revolution that may spread to other towns.

North Carolina Cities Mobilize Against Anti-Muni Broadband Bill

Full article: Ars Technica
Matthew Lasar
At least six cities in North Carolina have passed resolutions against cable-backed state legislation that would hamstring new municipal broadband projects. All oppose House of Representatives Bill H129 and its equivalent in the Senate, Bill 87. The proposed laws would bar new municipal ISPs from selling broadband to consumers in neighboring cities or pricing their services too low. The legislation has passed in the House.

Obama Promises to Stick to Big Broadband Investment

Leo King
President Barack Obama has insisted the U.S. government will invest aggressively in rolling out broadband, in spite of major spending cuts in other areas aimed at cutting $4 trillion from the country's deficit over 12 years. "I will not sacrifice the core investments that we need to grow and create jobs," said Obama, in a speech at George Washington University.

Broadband: Four Legislative Step to Ensure Economic Growth

Full article: Progressive States Network
Progressive state legislators can and must lay the framework for how broadband access and adoption will take place in their communities. Because just like with other basic community needs like education, health care, and transportation, broadband access requires the involvement of state legislators to determine how these critical public structures will take shape.

Making the Nation Ready for Broadband

Blair Levin
Why is it that the networks our first responders rely on, networks the 9/11 Commission told us we needed to upgrade, still offer technology that could only be considered modern by the standards of the last century? The National Broadband Plan will show how our country can act to utilize broadband to have our needed networks perform at a higher level.

Mobile Broadband -- A 21st-Century Plan

Full article: Federal Communications Commission
Julius Genachowski
The challenge is: We are lagging behind when it comes to broadband, and the costs of our failure to lead are high. Although we have extraordinary capacity for building the best technology in the world, that asset is being wasted if we don't have a great broadband infrastructure. It's like having the technology for great electric cars, but terrible roads.

Om Malik
Cisco is trying to counter the unease caused by Google's recent announcement that it will build Google Fiber, a fiber-based network that would connect homes at speeds of 1 Gbps.
