Stations Atwitter over Twitter

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
Michael Malone
If Oprah can use Twitter, so can TV stations, said panelists at a recent conference. While many deride the microblogging trend as a narcissistic fad, panelists said Twitter can be used like a police scanner to ferret out tips, can offer transparency about the newsgathering process, and will make for a tighter bond with viewers.

Michael Malone
Some private station group executices are finding life a little easier in some ways than it is for their publicly-traded counterparts. Many managers at privately-owned station groups say their unlisted status makes for a business strategy that's less reactive to the whims of the market and more able to make some decisions that will help build for the long term.

Jon Lafayette and Andrew Krukowski
Business conditions aren't likely to get better any time soon, and that has TV industry executives talking about more station owners declaring bankruptcy, getting taken over by their banks or, in some cases, shutting down operations. Amid all the bad news, most stations still represent a profitable business proposition.
