AT&T Prepares Two-Track Plan to Save T-Mobile Deal

Full article: Reuters
Nadia Daumouni and Diane Bartz
Even as AT&T gears up for a lengthy court battle against the Justice Department, the company is prepared to make concessions to address concerns that the T-Mobile deal is anti-competitive and could cause wireless prices to rise. Details of AT&T's proposed settlement were not available, but it is expected to include pledges to maintain T-Mobile's relatively cheap mobile subscription plans, and asset sales.

Ryan Kim
What happens to T-Mobile if AT&T can't buy it? There are several ways the company could go: alone, with Sprint, with a cable company or a private equity firm.

DOJ Sues to Block AT&T's Merger with T-Mobile

Full article: Media Post
Wendy Davis
In a move hailed by broadband advocates, the Department of Justice moved to block AT&T's planned $39 billion merger with T-Mobile. The FCC is independently reviewing AT&T's proposed buyout of T-Mobile. That agency can attempt to block the merger regardless of how the court rules on the DOJ's antitrust complaint.

So What Is a Gigabyte for Mobile Users, Anyway?

Full article: GigaOM
Kevin C. Tofel
Verizon’s move this week to follow rival AT&T by eliminating unlimited data plans may not affect most smartphone users today, but could impact them in the future as handsets are used for more purposes. Deciding which data plan will be enough for a month of smartphone use, without choosing a higher priced plan that provides more bandwidth than is needed represents a growing challenge.

Netflix Criticizes New Internet Billing by Bits

Full article: Washington Post
Cecilia Kang
Netflix said that moves by Internet service providers to charge users by the amount of data they use could end up costing consumers more. The Internet service providers argue they have to switch from flat-rate monthly data fees to tiered, or usage-based pricing, models to pay for network upgrades and prevent consumers from congestion that would lead to sluggish Internet use. But those upgrades aren’t that hard, nor that expensive, Netflix argued.

Michelle Maisto
Mobile users are satisfied when they get 4G, but when it comes to making a purchase decision it's pricing that ultimately drives their choice, according to a new report. The paper suggests suggests that cellular phone service providers who are willing to invest in their technology and educate consumers, coupled with a significant increase in network sizes, will increase their market share.
