Twenty-three towns in Western Mass. are using a 1906 law to form a cooperative to create a community-owned fiber broadband network offering high-quality Internet, phone and television services to member towns. And a new online news site in Michigan is trying to keep the public current on one topic: rivers.

The FCC released its 450-page assessment on the future of media. Unfortunately, many the report’s recommendations around localism, media consolidation and transparency are contradictory to its analysis. And Sonic’s new 1 Gbps fiber broadband connection with two phone lines for $70 is sure to shake up the broadband market in Sonoma County.

Rahul Gaitonde
President Barack Obama awarded 66 broadband grants totaling over $795 million. The awardees span 36 states and the District of Columbia. A majority of the project are fiber based, with 11 Fiber to the home projects and 13 fiber to the premises projects. Five of the projects have a tribal component.

Fiber to the X: One Size Does Not Fit All

Sean Buckley
If today's telco could build its last mile network from scratch today, no doubt it would have been all fiber, but in reality copper still dominates. In reality, what exists is a wide mix of approaches amongst larger and even smaller independent service providers.

Success of Fiber to the Home in Japan Spurs Envy Among Telecom Experts

Rahul Gaitonde
In Japan, fiber to the home has already become the leading method of broadband connectivity, with speeds reaching 1 Gigabits per second , and a seemingly endless potential for application development -- much to the envy of American telcom experts.

FTTH Deployments Face Predatory Cable Pricing

Carol Wilson
Two Louisiana organizations that have succeeded in building fiber-to-the-home networks say they are still facing challenges -- in the form of highly competitive pricing from a cable incumbent. Cox Communications froze cable rates in those communities, but didn't freeze rates in other areas.

ISPs Behaving Badly: Fiber in Your Diet Does Not Count, Either

Full article: Public Knowledge
Robb Topolski
A lot of ISPs are trying to trick you into believing that their network is all based on fiber-optic technology, when it actually is less. Qwest, Comcast, Cox, Time Warner Cable and many others proudly highlight the fiber in their Internet service, all without mentioning anywhere nearly as openly that the last segment is still plain-old copper.

Australia's Open National Broadband Network Sets the Benchmark for the 'Straggling' U.S.A.

Full article: CircleID
Paul Budde
Australia's national broadband network will be an FTTH-based open wholesale network that will connect (not pass) 90 percent of all Australians to fiber, with the remaining 10 percent of the population linked to equivalent services. There's a clear indication that U.S. telco and cable monopolies don't want to catch the Australian 'disease' of open telecoms networks and unrestrained competition.
