Truth? Yes, Sir!

Full article: Columbia Journalism Review
When a country goes to war, its citizens need to be appraised of ongoing developments and what is being done in their name. They have a right to as close an approximation of truth as journalists can deliver, given the limitations. The right to bear witness is part of the fight. We have two wars on now, and not enough truth.

Media Minutes: September 11, 2009

Privacy watchdogs want Congress and the FTC to create a system that would keep online marketing tactics transparent, accountable and respectful of user privacy. And following an investigation by the newspaper Stars and Stripes, the Pentagon was forced to terminate a journalist profiling program that rated reporters based on their likelihood of giving the military friendly coverage.

Army Used Profiles to Reject Reporters

Leo Shane III
The secret profiles commissioned by the Pentagon to rate the work of journalists reporting from Afghanistan were used by military officials to deny disfavored reporters access to American fighting units or otherwise influence their coverage as recently as 2008, an Army official acknowledged.

Kevin Baron
The U.S. military is canceling its contract with a controversial private firm that was producing background profiles of journalists seeking to cover the war that graded their past work as positive, negative or neutral.

Military Prepares Profiles on Reporters Visiting War Zones

Full article: Washington Post
Ann Scott Tyson
The U.S. military in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere regularly assesses the content and tone of the work of individual reporters to prepare for trips and interviews by those reporters, according to defense and military officials. But the officials denied that the analysis has been used to exclude journalists from embedding with troops.

Pentagon: Reporter Profiling Under Review

Full article: Stars and Stripes
Kevin Baron
Under fire following revelations that a military command in Afghanistan is compiling profiles of reporters covering U.S. military operations, Pentagon officials acknowledged that they were reviewing the practice even as they maintained that they were not making use of grades assigned to reporters' work by a Pentagon contractor.

Files Prove Pentagon Is Profiling Reporters

Full article: Stars & Stripes
Charlie Reed, Kevin Baron and Leo Shane III
Contrary to the insistence of Pentagon officials that they are not rating the work of reporters covering troops in Afghanistan, Stars and Stripes has obtained documents that prove that reporters' coverage is being graded. The documents indicate that the ratings are intended to help the Pentagon manipulate the types of stories that reporters produce while they are embedded with troops in Afghanistan.

'Stay Out of Jail Free:' A Closer Look at RNC Embedding

David Brauer
The carrot for reporters embedded with St. Paul police during the Republican National Convention, other than inside access: They wouldn't be told to leave the scene -- even though other journalists were subject to arrest if they didn't follow orders to disperse. Did that alter their coverage?
