The FCC released its 450-page assessment on the future of media. Unfortunately, many the report’s recommendations around localism, media consolidation and transparency are contradictory to its analysis. And Sonic’s new 1 Gbps fiber broadband connection with two phone lines for $70 is sure to shake up the broadband market in Sonoma County.

Free Press: FCC Report Falls Far Short of Real Solutions

Full article: Free Press
The FCC released its long-awaited report on the future of media, now re-titled "The Technology and Information Needs of Communities." Free Press is still reviewing the document but said that at first glance, the report appears to be a major disappointment. "The agency's conclusions seem disconnected from it's own evidence," said Free Press President Craig Aaron. "The report discusses many important ideas, but where the FCC actually has the power to help local communities, the agency abdicates its responsibility."

John Eggerton
The FCC's long-awaited report on the information needs of communities (465 pages including footnotes, said one commissioner) was released Thursday with a mix of praise and criticism for local TV station news. Recommendations include that the FCC should terminate its localism proceeding and replace enhanced disclosure of TV station's public service programming with a more streamlined, online version. Commissioner Michael Copps, who was critical of the report, said he would continue to push for enhanced disclosure and localism and called for commission hearings on the issues.

David Scharfenberg
There may, in the end, be no way to save the American metropolitan newspaper. Plummeting advertising revenue and competition from the Internet often seem forces too daunting for even the savviest of publishers. But in the last couple of years, broadsheets from Boston to Denver to San Francisco have settled on a single strategy: Go local.
