TV Stations Can Use New Channels to Fill Digital Holes

Full article: Wall Street Journal
Fawn Johnson
Television stations that will lose viewers as a result of converting to all-digital broadcasts can now apply to the FCC for access to new channels to restore reception in those areas.
Microsoft, Google and Dell argued against the decision, saying that relaying existing TV channels on new frequencies could foreclose the use of unlicensed "white space" communication devices.

Matthew Lasar
Motorola's Steve Sharkey says the company hopes to have a white space-compatible product out within a year or so: "There's obviously a lot of development that needs to go on and go through the FCC process. ... I think that's a fair time frame."

John Eggerton
Religious broadcasters fear that the devices to be used in open, unlicensed white spaces will wreak havoc on both their TV station signals and the wireless microphones used in many churches. The devices are still be tested.

In an attempt to help clear the way for usage of the "white spaces" spectrum, the FCC is proposing to ban some wireless microphones that could interfere with future white space devices.

Richard Whitt
While Google remains confident that the technical concepts behind spectrum sensing in white space devices are ultimately are sound, several other protection mechanisms that are "technically unimpeachable" have also been introduced into the Commission's record.
