Verizon's Deal with Big Cable Spells the Demise of the Telecom Act

Full article: SavetheInternet.com
Joel Kelsey
When Verizon announced it had signed a $3.6 billion deal with its competitors Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, it placed a capstone on the grave of the 1996 Telecom Act's biggest promise to America: genuine competition in communications service offerings. This deal directly contradicts the promise Congress made to the country when it passed the 1996 Telecommunications Act.

David Hatch
Tom Tauke, Verizon's top lobbyist, said that the telecom giant is urging the new Congress not to abandon earlier Democratic plans to update the 1996 Telecom Act, a law widely viewed as outdated for today's broadband-driven universe.

Firms Urges FCC to Enforce Telecom Act Rules

Full article: National Journal
Juliana Gruenwald
A coalition of communications companies that compete with the old Bell companies filed a petition calling on the FCC to adopt rules that supporters say is aimed at boosting competition in the telecom and broadband markets. The coalition maintains that the FCC has been too lax in enforcing rules put in place by the 1996 telecom act.

Comments for the FCC's Annual Inquiry on the State of U.S. Broadband (2009)

Free Press provides extensive evidence that the broadband market in the United States lacks competition and that Internet Service Providers are still offering speeds that are too slow and cost far too much. The comments also contain recommendations for broadband data collection and accelerated deployment. (September 2009)

Mike Volpi
Consumers want ample and unfettered access to the Internet. They want lots of megabits at low prices without caps and thresholds and blocks. Adam Smith wasn't big on Facebook, but he has the right idea to get consumers what they want today.
