Saving Rural Stations

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Josh Stearns
The vast majority of federal funding provided to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is distributed out to local stations like WMMT that collectively reach roughly 98 percent of the United States. And like WMMT, these stations don't just broadcast national news and Car Talk. At a time when newspapers are cutting back and struggling to stay afloat, and when the 6 o'clock news is filled with more weather reports and commercials than news, public broadcasters are actually investing more in local reporting.

Born of Pirate Radio, Seeking a Spot on British Dial

Full article: New York Times
Jennifer Mascia
Since first taking to the air from a makeshift studio on an offshore ship in 1964, Radio Caroline has endured government raids, shipwrecks and a decade of radio silence before finding a land-based studio in the southeastern county of Kent. From there, a cast of volunteer disc jockeys has transmitted album-oriented rock to a global audience over satellite radio and the Internet since 1999.

From an NPR Minnow, Lessons for Whales

Full article: New York Times
Peter Applebome
Amid the whales of contemporary radio, there are still a few distinctly independent minnows, like the anarchically eclectic WFMU-FM in Jersey City, N.J., or William O'Shaughnessy's intensely local WVOX-FM in New Rochelle, N.Y. But in its own eccentric way, in these quite perilous times for public broadcasting, WHDD-FM is not a bad model for what truly public radio might be.

All Programs Considered

Bill McKibben
About one in ten Americans tune in to public radio each week. The shows differ from the commercial right-wing shows in that they daily feature guests from a wide spectrum of American political and cultural life. And yet very little gets written about public radio.

Nate Anderson
When Public Radio Exchange developed the free Public Radio Player for the iPhone, the nonprofit hoped for 500,000 downloads. It now has 2.5 million. The PRX team has cranked out two iPhone apps. Both apps have positioned public radio as a major force when it comes to on-demand mobile applications.

Matthew Lasar
National Public Radio has been filing comments with the FCC, talking up its localism initiative, Android app, and new mobile site.
