FCC Proposes 2012 Low Power DTV Transition Deadline

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
The FCC has put low power TV stations on notice that they need to come up with a digital conversion plan, and has proposed a 2012 hard deadline to cut the analog cord. "With the full power transition now complete and providing the incentive for viewers, we believe it is appropriate to now require low power television stations to complete their transition to digital," the commission said.

A Year of Digital TV: Who Won the Transition?

Matthew Lasar
Remember the DTV transition? The nationwide switch from analog to digital over-the-air television broadcasting crossed the finish line a year ago. So, in the end, how did we do?

FCC Sued Over DTV Transition Info

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
An FCC that prides itself on transparency and openness is under fire from a conservative group that sees it quite differently. The group has filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit in U.S. District Court in an attempt to compel the FCC to turn over documents related to the DTV transition.

Analog Nightlights Go Out

John Eggerton
Another analog plug-pulling hard date came and went without fanfare. July 12 was the date when all the analog nightlight TV stations, 121 stations in 87 markets at its peak according to the FCC, had to end their analog broadcasts because it would have been illegal to continue past that date.

Some See E-Waste Crisis Trailing Switch to Digital TV

Full article: New York Times
Nathaniel Gronewold
There's growing concern that the United States' conversion from analog to digital television broadcasting will exacerbate a national e-waste problem and fuel the smuggling of cathode ray tubes to the developing world.

Switch to Digital TV Broadcasts Is a Work in Progress

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter
The digital television transition has already taken place, but some people are still struggling to receive over-the-air signals. Nielsen said that 2.5 million households remained without a digital signal as of June 14, more than a day after stations were required to stop their analog signals and broadcast solely in digital form.

Changeover to Digital TV Off to a Smooth Start

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter
For most TV viewers, the DTV transition amounted to a minor hiccup at most. Across the country, TV stations set up help lines and community organizations held events to aid confused viewers. Most stations didn't receive the flood of calls they had expected, a sign that the transition was smoother than many had predicted.

U.S. Declares Victory as DTV Transition Goes Rather Smoothly

Full article: Ars Technica
Matthew Lasar
All full-power TV stations in the United States have made the switch from analog to digital. How did the nation do overall? Quite well, with many procrastinators finally getting their act together. But, reports indicate that elderly people need hands-on help, and some consumers have lost stations. It's going to take more time to assess the situation of unprepared households.

2.8 Million Homes Still Unready for DTV Transition on June 12

Full article: Nielsen
In Nielsen's final update before the June 12 deadline, 2.8 million American households, or 2.5 percent of the television market, are completely unready for the transition to digital television. Younger, African American and Hispanic homes are disproportionately unready, while the elderly are the most ready.

Marguerite Reardon
In less than 24 hours all full-power broadcast TV stations will flip a switch to stop broadcasting their analog TV signals and will only broadcast TV signals in digital. And for millions who are unprepared, it could mean lights out on their favorite TV shows.
