California Is Fertile Ground for Journalism Innovation

Full article: Poynter Institute
Jim Romenesko
California's long-suffering newspaper industry has left many public officials unwatched and provided plenty of laid-off journalists eager to watch them. But three startups are trying to reinvent the newspaper in its own way.

Dying to Tell the Truth in Pakistan

Full article: Huffington Post
Jayshree Bajoria
Pakistan's army and its intelligence agencies, especially the top spy agency, the military-controlled Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence, have long been the most powerful institutions in a state where the military has ruled for half its history since Pakistan was created in 1947. And the army and the ISI don't like anyone looking too closely into their affairs -- as Pakistani journalists have found to their peril.

Full article: Poynter Institute
Steve Myers
The Knight Foundation is directing almost a third of its $4.7 million in News Challenge grants this year to help journalists and the public organize and analyze data and documents. In different ways, several of these projects seek to solve the persistent challenges of journalists working on investigative and daily stories: how to make sense of vast amounts of data and find the stories within.

Dylan Stableford
James Risen, the author and New York Times reporter who vowed to fight the subpoena federal prosecutors slapped him with last month in a CIA leak case, filed a 22-page affidavit on Tuesday, claiming that the government has been trying to get him to divulge his sources for years.

News Orgs Form Reports, Alliances Around Latest WikiLeaks Docs

Joe Pompeo
Media junkies today are poring over a cluster of reports from nine news organizations related to the latest trove of classified U.S. government documents released by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks. The whistleblowing organization sourced more than 700 leaked files about the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention facility to six news outlets in the U.S. and Europe. Three others, including the New York Times and the Guardian, obtained the files on their own.

In its 28 years on air, "Frontline’" has broadcast more than 500 documentaries and won a slew of awards for investigative reporting. But change is in the air. A small team of managers is repositioning the show for what it calls the "post-broadcast future."

The Newsonomics of a Single Investigative Story

Full article: Nieman Journalism Lab
Ken Doctor
California Watch’s "On Shaky Ground" series is aimed at preventing disaster, getting ahead of the Grim Reaper. The series took a big look at the likely safety issues in the state's schools if The Big One hits and found the state lacking in preparations. While it’s fun to celebrate great journalism, anytime, it’s vital to look at the newsonomics of this kind of investigative journalism. What did it take to get it done? How much did it cost and who paid for it? And, to look at the plainly fundamental question: How do we get lots more of it done in the future?

Why GQ Doesn't Want Russians to Read Its Story

David Folkenflik
For war journalist Scott Anderson, the most confounding part of his recent assignment for GQ to explore the root of terrorist acts in Russia a decade ago wasn't the suggestion of treachery and subterfuge he found. It was the reception his story ultimately received in the United States.
