Morgan Stanley Report on Broadband Pricing Wildly Overblown

Full article: Minyanville
Justin Rohrlich
A new report from Morgan Stanley that warns of skyrocketing cable prices as viewers migrate to the Internet may be overblown. Internet service is very profitable for cable providers, and they can cut programming costs so they will only have to raise the fees slightly. Plus, cable Internet services use just a few 'channels.' So while about a quarter of a cable operators' revenue comes from selling Internet access, they are now only allocate around 3 percent of their networks' total capacity to provide that access.

Who Will Battle Big Cable for Consumers?

Full article: Stamford Advocate
Angela Carella
With the growing number of retransmission disputes, pressure is mounting for the Congress and the FCC to step into the dispute between Fox and Cablevision. But big money from big cable and big networks have so far managed to clog up any true reform to the system.

Free Press's Lynn: What Spectrum Crisis?

Full article: The Hill
Sara Jerome
A media policy watchdog argues that as the White House plans auctions to reallocate certain chunks of spectrum, it needs to be mindful that not all of it go to AT&T and Verizon. He says that there is no evidence that neither AT&T nor Verizon is facing, or will face, a mobile data crunch due to a lack of spectrum.

Adam Lynn
If Comcast's proposed takeover of NBC Universal is approved, independent, diverse and groundbreaking programming will become nearly extinct. To understand why, it is appropriate to start with a primer about how TV shows reach our living rooms in the first place.

Consumer Groups Petition for Declaratory Ruling in Section 706 Proceeding

In this July 2008 petition to the FCC, Free Press et al argue that the agency should reconsider the Fifth 706 Report's conclusion that advanced telecommunications capability is being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion and therefore the FCC is not required to take "immediate action" to rectify this failure.
