Media Minutes: October 7, 2011

After three weeks of the Occupy Wall Street protests, the establishment media are beginning to pick up the story. But increased airtime doesn’t necessarily equal quality reporting. And a new paper says that Net Neutrality generates economic benefits for consumers — as much as $5,600 per user, per year.

(Most) ISPs Don't Inflate Their Speeds (Too Much): FCC

Michael Santo
The FCC has released the results of a year-long scientific study it conducted with regard to the upload and download speeds of 13 American Internet service providers. Of the 13, only four (or less than 1/3) averaged at or even above their advertised download speeds. So why do the others continue with misleading advertising?

The Five Levels of ISP Evil

Full article: GigaOM
Dane Jasper
Recently a number of ISPs, using a system from Paxfire, have been caught improperly redirecting end-user traffic in order to generate affiliate payments. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Paxfire and one of the ISPs. This is a serious allegation, but it's the tip of the iceberg. Most people don't understand the levels of sneakiness that service providers can engage in.

Karl Bode
Ten major Internet service providers are using the help of a company named Paxfire to not only manage their DNS Redirection ad income, but to actually hijack users' search results for popular terms such as "Apple" or "Dell" — allowing them to both track users and profit from search results.

Wendy Davis
More than 10 ISPs are redirecting search traffic on Yahoo and Bing, according to a new report. The report, which appeared in New Scientist, is based on research from the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley and says the ISPs are sending users who search for brand names directly to the marketers' sites rather than displaying the search engines' results pages.

A New Try at Curbing Piracy

This month, several major Internet service providers, including Verizon, Comcast, AT&T and Time Warner Cable, agreed to help movie studios and record labels identify Internet users who downloaded copyrighted content illicitly, warn them about the piracy and punish recalcitrant abusers. The agreement has troubling elements.

Greg Sandoval
Some of the country's largest Internet service providers are poised to leap into the antipiracy fight in a significant way. A group of bandwidth providers that includes AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon are closer than ever to striking a deal with media and entertainment companies that would call for them to establish new and tougher punishments for customers who refuse to stop using their networks to pirate films, music and other intellectual property,

Forget P2P -- Now ISPs Really Hate Netflix

Stacey Higginbotham
Oh Netflix, for $8 a month I can watch hours of online video in high-definition -- sometimes streaming multiple movies to different devices in my home. I love you, but it's clear my Internet Service Provider would rather see you throttled, or quite possibly set up a toll to make sure those precious bits you're streaming don't fall in cost too rapidly.

Wayne Friedman
Cable system operators continue to beat telephone companies when it comes to signing on new broadband/Internet subscribers. Cable operators grew 5.5 percent while telephone companies increased 3.3 percent.

What Level 3 vs. Comcast Says About the FCC's Obsolescence

Stacey Higginbotham
The "commercial disagreement" between Comcast and Level 3 is still ongoing, and while many (including the cable company) portray it as a simple peering disagreement, it's also illuminating two things about the current state of the Internet: Lack of competition, and the possible failure of the FCC to put regulations in place to solve the problem.
