A New Voice of America for the Age of Twitter

Mark Landler
When Walter Isaacson championed Voice of America's decision to shut down its shortwave radio broadcasts to China and shift those funds to the Internet, cellphones and other forms of digital media, he didn't realize he was creating a firestorm that is just a taste of foreign broadcast battles to come.

Fox News' Megyn Kelly Gives a Nice Demonstration in Corporate Censorship

David Neiwert
One of libertarians' real blind spots is that they seem to believe that only government is capable of taking away your freedoms and your rights. It never seems to occur to them that lots of other people are perfectly capable of taking away your freedoms. Especially the giant corporations who control our media.

The Pentagon Pundits: Still a Deafening Silence

New York Times journalist David Barstow won a Pulitzer Prize for his work exposing the Pentagon's military analyst propaganda program, but no one seemed to notice. And even when the New York Press Club awarded Barstow its Golden Keyboard Award, mainstream TV news editors have yet to book him for an appearance.

Media, Pentagon Spar over Control of Information

Full article: Associated Press
The Pentagon now spends more than $550 million a year -- at least double the amount since 2003 -- on public affairs, and that doesn't including personnel costs. Along with putting out its own messages, the public affairs arm tries to regulate what other media put out. And as reporting out of Iraq turned more negative, the public affairs department has increased its ground rules for media who embed with troops from one to four pages.

DOD Pundit Report Finds No Wrongdoing

Zachary Roth
The DOD's just-released report on its TV pundit hiring program finds that the department did not violate prohibitions on using public finds for propaganda by ceding the networks with retired military analysts.

Israeli Media on Defensive over Gaza War Coverage

Israel's usually unforgiving media has had to fend off accusations that it has practised self-censorship and muzzled dissent with its overtly patriotic coverage of the army's offensive in Gaza.

Pentagon May Have Mixed Propaganda with PR

Walter Pincus
The Pentagon's inspector general said that the Defense Department's public affairs office may have "inappropriately" merged public affairs and propaganda operations in 2007 and 2008 when it contracted out $1 million in work for a strategic communications plan for use by the military in collaboration with the State Department.

John Brown
The state department expects to spend just $5.6 million on public diplomacy in Iraq in fiscal 2008. But Secretary of Defense Robert Gates plans to spend $300 million for propaganda to "engage and inspire" Iraq's population to support its government and U.S. policies through a variety of media products and entertainment.
