As Networks Speed Up, Data Hits a Wall

Full article: New York Times
Jenna Wortham
The newest smartphones are intended to run on speedy 4G networks that allow people to effortlessly stream music, watch Netflix movies and tune in live to a Mets game, wherever they are. But there’s a catch, of course. Cellphone plans that let people gobble up data as if they were at an all-you-can eat buffet are disappearing.

So What Is a Gigabyte for Mobile Users, Anyway?

Kevin C. Tofel
Verizon’s move this week to follow rival AT&T by eliminating unlimited data plans may not affect most smartphone users today, but could impact them in the future as handsets are used for more purposes. Deciding which data plan will be enough for a month of smartphone use, without choosing a higher priced plan that provides more bandwidth than is needed represents a growing challenge.

T-Mobile Kills Unlimited Data, Unveils New Tiered Data Plans for Smartphones

Full article: FierceWireless
Sue Marek
T-Mobile quietly eliminated its $30 per month unlimited data plan for smartphones in favor of four new tiered data plans. The operator also said that if customers go over their allotted data cap they will not incur overage charges but instead will have their data speeds throttled down to a 2G experience of around 100 Kbps or less.

Charles Arthur
The inventor of the world wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, has warned Internet service providers that plans for a "two-speed" Internet go against the principles that have let the net grow so rapidly in the past two decades.

Now AT&T Is Talking Up Tiers

Stacey Higginbotham
Hot on the heels of Verizon talking about tiered data plans for the iPhone as well as new plans for its LTE roll out, AT&T is signaling more of its thoughts on pricing plan changes. The nation's second-largest wireless carrier also announced a new pricing plan for tablets that sees month-to-month access as opposed to a contract even on a post-paid plan. But first, more on the pricing plan changes.

The Open Internet: A Case for Net Neutrality

Full article: The Open Internet
You can access the Internet through your ISP as much as you want for anything you want. All your data goes through a single connection, and you're charged one monthly fee. But with the FCC's new Net Neutrality rules, all that could change. Here's an infographic that tells the story.

Levi Sumagaysay
Net Neutrality theoretically gets a boost from action by the FCC, which has yet to release the full set of rules. But from what they heard at the FCC meeting, Net Neutrality backers -- consumer advocacy groups and companies that deliver content, such as Netflix, Amazon.com and Facebook -- were either disappointed or reacted cautiously.

Critics of the FCC's new Net Neutrality rules warn that "usage-based pricing" for accessing the Internet at home and preferential treatment for companies that pay extra for fast-lanes, allows service providers to begin picking and choosing which websites can run faster than others over their networks.
