Art Brodsky
News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media," by Juan Gonzalez and Joseph Torres. Gonzalez, a journalist and activist, and Torres, a former journalist turned activist, spent about eight years compiling and writing this book, and the depth of research shows as they weave two equally compelling and related, story lines.

'News for All the People': Juan Gonzalez and Joseph Torres on the Epic Story of Race and the U.S. Media

Full article: Democracy Now!
After seven years of research, the groundbreaking new book, News For All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media, examines how the media has played a pivotal role in perpetuating racist views in the United States. It recalls lives of the unsung pioneering black, Latino, Native American and Asian-American journalists who challenged the worst racial aspects of the white-owned media. It also tells the untold story of how the fight over who controls the Internet is just the latest chapter in a centuries-old debate on the role of the media -- and the technologies used to deliver it -- in a democracy.
Media Justice Activists Launch New Effort to Target Black Web Users

Full article: ColorLines
Jamilah King
A group of media justice advocates is determined to move the conversation about Web rights from the Beltway to the mainstream. The goal is to take what's usually a wonky back-room conversation between politicians and telecom companies and engage with ordinary people in communities of color, who they say often feel the brunt of decades of deregulatory policies.

DoJ's Lawsuit Blocking AT&T-T-Mobile Merger Welcome News for People of Color

Full article: Huffington Post
Joe Torres
The Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit to block the $39 billion merger between AT&T and T-Mobile is great news for communities of color, who disproportionately rely on wireless service to make phone calls and access the Internet. Hopefully, lawmakers and civil rights groups will reexamine their positions and rescind their support of a merger that is clearly not only bad for our communities but bad for our country.

As FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker leaves the agency for a lucrative job at Comcast, Free Press delivered a letter to the Commission, asking the four remaining commissioners to pledge they won’t seek or accept employment with AT&T or T-Mobile, since they will be voting on that $39 billion merger. Also, some updates on DC's revolving door and public media funding in Florida.

Jamilah King
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski let the world hear about his long-awaited Net Neutrality plan. The proposal is an attempt to formalize Net Neutrality. While big telecom companies applaud Genachowski's plan, longtime advocates of Net Neutrality aren't nearly as satisfied. So what are they so upset about?

Politicians, Artists Draw Broadband Battle Lines

Jamilah King
As Net Neutrality moves back into the headlines, artists are positioning themselves as stakeholders in the debate. Will they be able to maintain freedom of expression across multimedia platforms? How the Net Neutrality issue is resolved will shape the American economy and American pop culture for decades.
