FTC to Investigate Google over Antitrust Issues

Full article: Paid Content
Joe Mullin
Is Google the next Microsoft? That’s what folks are sure to be asking, now that the Federal Trade Commission is opening a wide-ranging investigation about whether Google's dominance in its core search business oversteps antitrust law. It's much too early to know whether the investigation will end up as a huge tech antitrust battle similar to the government’s legal fight with Microsoft in the 1990s.

FTC Workshop on the Future of Journalism

Start: 03/09/2010 - 00:00

End: 03/10/2010 - 00:00

Timezone: Etc/GMT-5

Consumers are increasingly turning to the Internet for news and information. Advertisers are moving ads to online sites and scaling back on ad buys as a result of the recession, and news organizations are struggling with large debts they took on during better times. As a result, some are questioning how journalism can survive and thrive in the future. The FTC’s upcoming workshop will address proposals to better-support and lower the costs of journalism

Debate the News: Summarizing the Comments Submitted to the FTC

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Amy F. Reiter
In the lead-up to this month's Federal Trade Commission workshop on the future of journalism, the agency invited the public to submit comments for consideration. The commenters agrees on two points: Nobody's happy with the state of journalism today, yet everybody thinks that reputable journalism is worth saving. And some have ideas on how to save it.

We're All Fact-Checkers Now

Esther Dyson
Spin, propaganda, and censorship persist in journalism, but with one big difference: Almost anyone can now operate as a reporter. How can we ensure that these self-nominated reporters respect the truth? Everyone has to become a better reader -- more skeptical and more curious.

Douglas MacMillan
The FTC is expected to issue new advertising guidelines that will require bloggers to disclose when they're writing about a sponsor's product and voicing opinions that aren't their own. The new guidelines say that blog authors should disclose when they're being compensated by an advertiser to discuss a product.
