Ethnic Media Still Lack Visibility at Media Reform Conference

Full article: New America Media
Anthony Advincula
At the National Conference for Media Reform in Boston, the round table on ethnic media drew a packed audience. But with world events and a down economy hurting media outlets, more ethnic media representation throughout the conference could help gain the attention and support the ethnic media sector needs to survive.

Ethnic Media Going Strong

Full article: StopBigMedia.com
While news about the mainstream media seems to get worse by the day, the same can't be said for ethnic media. A recent study revealed that the launch of ethnic media outlets and their reach have been increasing over the past four years. The audience for ethnic media grew by 16 percent during this period, reaching 57 million people on a regular basis.

Cindy Von Quednow
Mainstream newsrooms have been in trouble for several years. They've lost readers to online news outlets, blogs and the economy pushed several to make dramatic changes or shut down. Ethnic media are not safe from the crisis but journalists in this industry said their fate might not be as grave as that of mainstream newspapers.

Marcelo Ballvé
A new poll shows continuing audience gains for ethnic media outlets. Hispanic TV's reach, is approaching total: It's now viewed by 86 percent of Hispanic adults. Asian media are thriving, too. And African American-oriented media outlets reach 10 percent more African-Americans than they did in 2005.

Ethnic Press Stung by Recession, Advertising Drop

Terence Chea
The sinking economy is threatening ethnic publications that immigrant communities rely upon to stay informed. Although the ethnic press once seemed immune to the forces hurting mainstream newspapers, a growing number of publications are laying off staff, closing print editions or shutting down altogether.
