John Eggerton
Cablevision has decided to file suit against the FCC Media Bureau's decision to require its Madison Square Garden subsidiary to make its HD feeds available to Verizon and AT&T. It has asked the Second circuit Court of Appeals to stay the Nov. 25 effective date of making those feeds available per that FCC decision.

Cablevision Systems posted a higher quarterly profit as it added more Internet and telephone customers. The cable operator, however, lost more video customers than expected and posted a reduction in the number of total products sold for the first time in recent years.

Cablevision Faults FCC As TV Blackout Ends

Sara Jerome
Cablevision subscribers regained access to Fox channels after a blackout that began on Oct. 16, which impacted around 3 million subscribers in the New York area. Cablevision, however, sounded miffed about the final agreement with Fox and seemed unimpressed that the government did not do more to resolve the situation.

Fox, Cablevision Reach Agreement, End Blackout

George Stahl
Cablevision and Fox Networks reached an agreement ending a two-week stalemate marked by heated rhetoric, political pressures and missed sporting events. The animosity continued even after a settlement was reached as Cablevision complained about agreeing to pay Fox "an unfair price" and about "the absence of any meaningful action" from the FCC.

Where's the Game?

Full article: New York Times
All of the retransmission consent debates underscore the sweeping changes in the economics of TV. When retransmission arrangements were first made 20 years ago, the balance of power was roughly equal. Now, the balance is tilted toward broadcasters. The fact that broadcasters also use the public airwaves justifies intervention to bring transparency to the process. Meanwhile, Fox and Cablevision should cut a deal.
