Rob Arcamona
This year turned out to be one that could fit well in a Billy Joel song: peppered protesters, jailed journalists, Internet crusaders ... the list goes on. To recap a year that has been chock-full of shifts in media, here's a list of the top 10 (plus one for good luck) legal developments of 2011.

Shut That Camera Off: Apple Targets Concert Filming

Michael Melchor
Some time back came word that lawmakers were looking to make unauthorized online streaming a felony. This week it was announced that Apple is not only all for that idea, apparently, but it is looking to make sharing concert footage that much harder.

Michael Rose
The Save the Internet coalition has published a suggested open letter to Steve Jobs that suggests a recent patent application is deeply repugnant to the ideals of freedom.

Why Is GLAAD Supporting the AT&T and T-Mobile Merger?

Full article: Queerty
Daniel Villarreal
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a letter to the FCC supporting the AT&T-T-Mobile merger in hopes it will bring more access, faster service and competitive pricing. That's nice except that the merger probably won’t do any of that. And the merger also has nothing to do with defamation, meaning GLAAD has gone beyond its purported mission and needlessly inserted itself into a political dogfight.

15,000 Comments on AT&T, T-Mobile Deal Hit FCC

Maisie Ramsay
The skyrocketing number of comments filed with the FCC about AT&T's massive $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile can be largely attributed to the efforts of media reform group Free Press. About 15,000 people are already estimated to have voiced their opposition to the deal.

Connecting the Dots: Saving PBS, NPR, the Internet, and Yes! Democracy

Full article: Huffington Post
Alison Rose Levy
Most people don't realize that prior to the 1970's, there were no corporate lobbyists on K Street. But since that time, they have built an unprecedented web of power. And you can't appease people who are trying to keep you disconnected and in the dark. It's time to actively challenge the corporate influence in Washington and build a movement that insists on real dialogue and debate. And that depends on independent and inclusive journalism.

John Nichols
Despite President Barack Obama's promise to defend a free and open Internet from corporate control, his appointees to the FCC ended the year by embracing a version of Net Neutrality that advocates accurately refer to as "toothless" and "bitterly disappointing."

Maury Litwack
To many Internet users, this law’s implication is vague and hard to follow. To one group of users, this law, its implication and why they needed to speak out was clear. Reddit PAC was the brain child of Eddie Geller, a Los Angeles comedian who was upset about the possible defeat of Net Neutrality. And he's only begun to fight.

Open Internet Supporters Lash Out at 'Fake Net Neutrality'

Brian Montopoli
Open Internet supporters say the Net Neutrality agreement worked out by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski falls far short of their goal. They complain that the compromise with AT&T and other Internet service providers could be "worse than nothing," in the words of Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.).
