Media Policymaking At the FCC
The Free Press research and legal teams regularly craft detailed comments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that complement the flood of comments sent by our members and e-activists.
In doing so, we frequently partner with other public interest groups, including Consumers Union and Consumer Federation of America. These filings span a wide spectrum of issues and have been organized based on the following categories:
Media Ownership
Media ownership rules ensure a diversity of voices on the public airwaves, protect local communities from media monopolies, and promote media ownership by women and minorities.

Future of the Internet
FCC filings on the future of the Internet fall into three broad categories:
- Universal Broadband
Nearly half of the nation’s households are not connected to high-speed Internet service -- also known as broadband -- and Americans pay more for slower speeds than citizens of most other industrialized countries. Getting everyone connected to open, fast and affordable Internet should be a national priority.
Key issues and important proceedings at the FCC include: the collection of broadband data, the state of U.S. broadband deployment, and the Universal Service Fund.
- Net Neutrality
Net Neutrality is the guiding principle that preserves the free and open Internet. It ensures users' right to the lawful content and online services of their choice.

- Spectrum Policy
Unused portions of the broadcast spectrum -- public airwaves -- have the potential to bring the economic, political and social benefits of broadband to all Americans.
Spectrum-related dockets at the FCC include the government auction of the 700MHz spectrum, the Skype Petition and the AWS-3 auction.
