Conference to Explore “An FCC For the Internet Age”

FCC General Counsel Austin Schlick and former National Economic Council member Susan Crawford will be among the speakers at a March 5 half-day conference on “An FCC for the Internet Age: Reform and Standard-setting.” Sponsored by Public Knowledge, Silicon Flatirons and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF).

There will be two panel discussions. The first will be on “The Present and Future of FCC Reform,” from 9:15 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., moderated by Gigi B. Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge. In addition to Schlick and Crawford, who is now a professor of law at the University of Michigan, other speakers on the panel are:

Mary Beth Richards, FCC, special counsel for FCC reform; Mark Cooper, Director of Research Consumer Federation of America; Matthew C. Hussey Telecommunications Legislative Assistant* *for Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME); Nicholas Johnson, former FCC Commissioner, now Professor of Law at the University of Iowa College of Law.

The second panel, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m., moderated by Robert Atkinson, ITIF president, will be on “Regulatory Reforms:
Standard-Setting and Mediating Institutions.” Speakers on that panel are:

Paul de Sa, chief of FCC’s Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis; Kathryn C. Brown, Verizon Senior Vice President, Public Policy & Corporate Responsibility; Pierre de Vries, Silicon Flatirons Senior Adjunct Fellow University of Colorado; Richard Whitt, Google Washington Telecom and Media Counsel; Kathleen Wallman, CEO Wallman Strategic Consulting.
