Public Citizen Discussion with John Nichols & Bob McChesney

Join Public Citizen for a discussion of The Death and Life of American Journalism. Public Citizen President Robert Weissman will be moderating. This event is FREE but space is limited to the first 100 people who register.

WHAT: Robert McChesney and John Nichols, co-founders of Free Press - a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to reforming the media - will discuss their new book, The Death and Life of American Journalism. In this informative study of how to sustain traditional journalism in the digital age, the co-authors address the flagging industry through the eyes of the Founding Fathers, asking what Thomas Jefferson would do about the death of the American newspaper.

McChesney and Nichols maintain that the core doctrine of freedom of the press was not limited to its being free of government interference and censorship, but that its vitality and variety were meant to be sustained by subsidized access to printing and mailing. McChesney and Nichols make a unique argument based on the support that the founding fathers gave the press two centuries ago: The federal government should provide the press with a subsidy of $30 billion a year to rebuild the essential culture of the Fourth Estate.
