Deep Packet Inspection has many legitimate uses, but has gained notoriety for its use in delivering behavioral ads, injecting javascript banners into websites, and identifying -- and ultimately filtering or throttling -- P2P traffic. DPI isn't inherently bad, but the way it can be mis-used by carriers or governments certainly may be.
