Media Minutes OUTTAKES: McLeod Talks Fair Use

Media Minutes spoke with Kembrew McCleod who co-produced, along with Benjamin Franzen, the upcoming documentary Copyright Criminals: This Is a Sampling Sport.

The film focuses primarily on the story of sampling in hip-hop – a place where new musical styles directly collided with copyright law itself nearly two decades ago. In this clip, McCleod discusses artists who claim that their use of samples falls under the legal category of “fair use” using the mash-up artist Girltalk, who used over 300 samples on his last album, as an example.
