2008 Internet Freedom Bash
The first annual Internet Freedom Bash, held in New York City on October 23, was quite a party. More than 200 committed activists, media reformers and Internet freedom fighters got together on a cold fall night to toast the growing movement for a more open and accessible Internet.
Along with Free Press, the benefit host committee included Tina Bennett, John Carney, Phil Donahue, Malcolm Gladwell, Seth Herzog, Patrick Hoogendijk, Jamie Johnson, John Johnson, Eric Klinenberg, Larry Lessig, Matthew Modine, Jonah Peretti, Andrew Rasiej, Micah Sifry, Sam Rockwell, Baratunde Thurston, Jeff Toobin, Kathryn Tucker, Vicky Ward, Lizz Winstead and Free Press Board Chair Tim Wu, among others.
"The Internet is at a crossroads," Free Press Executive Director Josh Silver told the crowd. "It's up to people like us, and the millions of others who have joined the movement, to continue to fight for an open Internet and a better democracy."
