Last December, on Sam Zell's first day as CEO of Tribune Co., he promised no cuts. But as ad sales fall and the credit crunch stalls real estate deals, Tribune Co.'s need for cash grows. So far, 1,100 people have been axed, and the layoffs will keep coming.
