The Server Standards Work Group (SSWG) of the Alliance for Community Media (ACM) announced today that they will debut a new Video File Sharing Social Network at the Alliance For Community Media’s International Conference and Exhibition held here from July 9-12.
Attendees to the conference are invited to the launch of the new Video File Sharing Social Network on Wednesday, July 9, @ 7:00pm on the trade show floor. At this time the SSWG will honor the efforts over the past years of the vendors for their help and dedication in making this new service possible.
The new file sharing capability features a “YouTube”-like website that enables PEG channels to view and download each other’s video content without the reformatting and delays that currently make the process cumbersome. The website features low-resolution content previews that enable viewers to quickly sort through multiple selections before downloading the full high-resolution video. Users will also have social networking features like the ability to track frequently downloaded videos and contributors, post comments and vote on favorites.
“This network will help all PEG channels meet their chronic need for quality, locally produced content,” said Rich Desimone, SSWG Chairperson. “It will help showcase the talents of PEG channel content providers and provide a new value in being a member of the Alliance for Community Media.”
The Video File Sharing Social Network will support the exchange of broadcast-quality MPEG2 video files. Users of the network will be required to provide content that complies with “ACM Compliant” metadata and digital video standards established by the SSWG, and use video servers equipped with the “ACM Compliant” software. To date five equipment vendors (Leightronix, Maestrovision, Rushworks, TelVue and Tightrope) have committed to making and upgrading their servers with compatible software. The underlying technology for the website was developed in collaboration with the TelVue Corporation.
“Helping the PEG channel community articulate and achieve visionary goals is one of our central tenets at TelVue,” said Joseph Murphy, President and CEO of TelVue. “We are proud and honored to provide a capability that will help bring a wider variety of high quality content to community channels everywhere.”
During the ACM Conference and Expo attendees can see demonstrations of how the service works by visiting the booth of any of the five participating vendors. Stations interested in being beta testers for the Video File Sharing Social Network can sign up at the booths of participating equipment vendors.
