As more and more video is available on the Internet, one question moves sharply into focus: What will happen to cable and satellite television providers? Do we really need specialized networks for our TV, or will the Internet be enough once someone figures out an easy way to get Internet video onto our TV screens?
That’s a big question, with lots of technical debate about the cost and quality of various technologies. If I ran a cable company, I’d certainly be worried (and that explains why some, like Time Warner Cable, are fighting to keep cable networks from putting their programs, like “The Daily Show” online.)
Comcast, at least, is trying to figure out how to merge the Internet with its existing business. When I was looking into “The Daily Show” story, I spoke to Amy Banse, the president of Comcast’s Internet unit, about Fancast, the video portal the company introduced earlier this year.
