Murdoch lurking over New York City, once again

Rupert
Murdoch is bidding on New York City.
He recently bid $580 million to buy out Newsday, which is currently owned by
The Tribune Company. Newsday may become an addition to Murdoch’s media
collection. If Murdoch does buy out this local paper, he and his company will
own three New York-based newspapers, as well as several New York television stations. He is
currently seeking waivers to violate the media ownership rules, adopted
by the FCC last December.

As a
resident (born and raised) of Queens,
New York
, this really annoys me.
Many people hearing this news probably don’t even know what Newsday is. I grew
up reading the paper. During all my years in public school, I was taught to
keep up with the news. Newsday was the easiest to read, in terms of vocabulary
and content, and so, I read it in elementary school. In junior high school, I
read the Daily News, and in high school, the New York
Times. Newsday, as a newspaper, has the most coverage of local
news. It
may not cover things that are happening on an international scale as well as
the NYT, but it reports on events that are happening around my town and city.
The people of New York City
read this paper.

Although the Tribune Company is Chicago-based company, they
did an excellent job of preserving the need to report local news. If Rupert
Murdoch buys Newsday, that local-news feel will be lost – and it’s not just the
issue with this certain paper. I don’t want to read the same news over and over
again. The FCC’s allowance of purchasing Newsday by News Corporation will
definitely say something about the commission and how much they really care
about this issue. I just don’t want to have to read The Murdoch Journal, The
Murdoch Post, and Murdochday.
