Myanmar military turns off democracy by turning off the Internet

In their efforts to quell the recent uprising in Myanmar the military shut down Internet service to the entire country. Further evidence of the importance of open communication networks to democratic activity and the seriousness with which those in power perceive that as a 'threat.'
This is the quote that really got me given the phone and cable companies' duopoly control of Internet service in the U.S.:
"Myanmar has just two Internet service providers, and shutting them down was not complicated."
With AT&T and Verizon's recent complicity in the NSA's surveillance program, it's sadly not hard to imagine something like this happening here. Scary.
