A Few Lobbyists Outweigh 250,000 Americans

Regular citizens suffered another defeat yesterday, as the FCC ignored the call from more than 250,000 Americans. With their decision yesterday, the FCC essentially handed over the 700 MHz band -- a chunck of the public airwaves that will be abandonded when TV broadcasters will switch to digital signals -- to AT&T, Verizon and Comcast. This valuable public airwaves represent our best opportunity to connect tens of millions of Americans to an open and affordable Internet. These airwaves can carry a wireless Internet signal through concrete buildings and over mountains – a signal that can single-handedly close the digital divide for people in both rural and urban America. Rather than improving our broadband capacity, the FCC choose to protect the status quo – an Internet business model where Americans pay them higher prices for slower speeds. In the last six years, America has already fallen from 4th to 15th in broadband use. This decision by the FCC will no doubt continue this trend and prevent millions of Americans from accessing the Internet.
