Mak Yin-ting

Hong Kong Journalists Association

Yin-ting Mak has been a journalist for more than 23 years. Apart from her professional work, she served on the executive committee of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) for 15 years and served for five years as chairperson. Under her leadership, HKJA and other NGOs mobilized one-tenth of the population in Hong Kong in a procession on July 1, 2003, that helped to shelve a bill that might jeopardize freedom of expression and other human rights. She also took part in pushing the government to be more open during the SARS saga. Her book about the experience was published by the association. She now serves as general secretary for the HKJA but will leave the job in June.
