Iván Román

National Association of Hispanic Journalists

Iván Román joined the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) as executive director in September 2003 after working as a professional journalist for nearly two decades. Román oversees NAHJ’s many educational and professional development programs, and its growing advocacy efforts aimed at getting more Latinos into the country's newsrooms and fighting for more fair coverage of the nation's Latinos. Through its innovative Parity Project, NAHJ also brings together journalists, community members, educators and others in dozens of cities throughout the country to jointly strive to gain more Latino newsroom representation. Before joining NAHJ, Román was the San Juan bureau chief for the Orlando Sentinel, where he focused on the politics, business and civic life of Puerto Rico and other major stories in the Caribbean and Venezuela. He also worked at the Rochester Times-Union, the San Juan Star, El Nuevo Herald, and the Miami Herald, covering Dominican, Nicaraguan, Puerto Rican, African-American and other communities in addition to local government, gay and lesbian issues, and national Hispanic affairs. From 1995 to 1998, Román was executive director of the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism at San Francisco State University, which spearheaded various journalism education and mentoring initiatives.
