Purple Politics: Coverage of LGBT Issues in the Media

Date: Saturday, June 7th
Time: 1:30pm to 3:00pm
Room: 205 A B
Track: Civil Rights, Social Justice, and Media
Session Type: panel

From gay marriage to political scandals, the mainstream media have had a long history of stereotypical coverage of issues of concern to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. Too often, the media portrays issues affecting the LGBT community as wedge issues, thereby marginalizing the LGBT community in the political process. Panelists will discuss the latest issues and trends in the media’s coverage of issues concerning the LGBT community, especially within a political context.
