There Is No Media Justice Without Women: Models for Feminist Social Justice Media Activism

Date: Saturday, June 7th
Time: 10:30am to 12:00pm
Room: 205 C D
Track: Civil Rights, Social Justice, and Media
Session Type: panel

Gender inequality persists in the media work force and economy, in print, on-screen, behind the camera and in newsrooms. Women are still treated as “second-class” citizens throughout the media landscape. Corporate media does not fairly represent or serve diverse perspectives and the social justice concerns of women. This is often true of independent media and activists. This panel explores diverse strategies for challenging gender and other inequalities in media policy as well as increasing media analysis, community empowerment through media production, constituency-based, cross-sector media advocacy in the service of social justice by, for and about women.
