The dinosaurs of America’s new-media age, newspapers are hulking behemoths that cost too much and can’t seem to attract young readers. But there’s still no better source for what’s happening in our communities, and newspapers are still capable of committing serious journalism and shaping the national political debate.Yet it seems every day brings more bad news about the newspaper business: layoffs, cutbacks, takeovers and shutdowns. Fingers are pointed at the Internet, media consolidation, mismanagement, corporate greed, disappearing readers — who’s to blame? Or has the death of the American newspaper been greatly exaggerated?
