Standing Up Against Hate Speech

Date: Saturday, June 7th
Time: 10:30am to 12:00pm
Room: 205 A B
Track: Civil Rights, Social Justice, and Media
Session Type: panel

In recent years, an increasing number of radio and television stations and networks have allowed DJs, talk show hosts and their favorite organized hate groups to spew hatred of immigrants, gays, lesbians, and people of color over the public airwaves. There is now verifiable data that links hate speech to hate crimes, which are proliferating, especially against Latinos. What actions can be taken to challenge broadcasters that produce and promote hate speech? Does media consolidation exacerbate the problem? What’s the correct balance between free speech and human rights in discussing these issues? Panelists will present research and case studies, to be followed by a brainstorming session with the audience on strategies and solutions.
