Future of the Internet: Open, Neutral, Mobile and Ubiquitous

Date: Friday, June 6th
Time: 1:30pm to 3:00pm
Room: Auditorium 1
Track: Media Policy
Session Type: panel

From Comcast’s blocking of BitTorrent to Verizon censoring pro-choice text messages, threats to basic Internet freedoms became very real in 2007. Net Neutrality remains one of the most hotly contested media issues in Washington today. What can policymakers do to protect “the First Amendment of the Internet,” and how can activists increase grassroots pressure to keep the free-flowing Web out of the hands of would-be gatekeepers? Panelists will discuss the fight for an open Internet at a time of intense opposition from a powerful cartel of phone and cable companies. We’ll open the discussion to the audience to articulate a people-powered vision for the future of the Internet.
