Michael Matza
This year, largely because of the efforts of Pete Tridish and the organization he created, called Prometheus Radio Project, the FCC will grant licenses for up to 3,000 new low-power FM stations nationally, with an estimated five to 10 in the Philadelphia area.

John Broomall
College radio advocates are protesting the loss of student-run FM stations. On campuses nationally, cash-strapped colleges and universities are selling or leasing stations to outsiders. There is a counter trend and good news from Bloomington, home of Illinois State University, Normal. Student-operated radio station WZND just became the recipient of a donated LPFM license from Rock in Victory Ministries

Brandy Doyle
It's not often that the FCC asks us how to do its job. But Sept. 6 is the deadline for the public to respond to a pretty exciting question: "Should we set aside channels for community radio in big and medium-sized cities?" It's a rare opportunity not only to tell the FCC how to do its job, but to remind the agency of who it works for.

Erik Sass
Cumulus Media rounded out a mixed series of quarterly results from the radio business this week, revealing that total revenues were basically flat. The radio group, currently in the process of acquiring rival Citadel Broadcasting for $2.5 billion, attributed the lackluster second-quarter results to the absence of political advertising.

Hannah Sassaman
Free Press members fought for years to expand local, accountable, low power community radio to their cities and towns -- and as part of a huge coalition, won that fight in late 2010. Hannah Sassaman, a longtime organizer on media reform and justice issues and a veteran of the Prometheus Radio Project, wrote these thoughts on that victory, and what we need to do next.

Michael LeClair
Low-power stations potentially offer a way to rejuvenate broadcasting by bringing into the field a new array of potential owners and new ideas on how to make radio. They also provide a potential pool for full-service licensees to call on as current radio talent matures and retires.

New LPFM Rule Still Leaves Questions

Full article: Radio World
Despite passage of the Local Radio Community Act -- which drops third-adjacent protections to full-power FMs in order to fit more low-power FMs on the band -- one proponent is worried about possible displacement of LPFMs in some cases. The Amherst Alliance is asking the FCC to establish protection from displacement for LPFMs, translators, boosters and Class D educational stations in cases where the act does not explicitly preclude such protection.

Aaron Moselle
In early January, President Barack Obama quietly signed into law the Local Radio Community Act, which expands the available airspace and with it the number of low-power FM licenses the FCC can award across the country.

Low-Power FM Radio to Gain Space on the Dial

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter
Advocates for low-power FM, as it is called, say the stations are a slight corrective to the consolidation of commercial radio. Soon there will be more: this month President Obama signed the Local Community Radio Act. Freeing space on the radio dial for local voices might seem a moot point in an age when anyone can start an Internet radio station. But the appropriation of the public airwaves remains a vital and, for some, very emotional issue.

Matthew Lasar
When Haiti's devastating earthquake hit last January, the world responded with a wave of humanitarian relief efforts. But unlike previous disasters, they also deployed new communications systems -- text messaging, digital crowd sourcing, and social networking, among other platforms. Yet the electronic medium most successfully deployed was not the newest, but one of the oldest.

Radio is still the best communications technology for reaching the American people. It is free to listen, of course, and community radio provides citizens with access to the public airwaves, and opportunities to amplify voices underserved by NPR and Clear Channel. So why doesn't the social justice community at large get behind the buildout of community radio?
