The dial-up Internet connection is not an endangered species in Jericho or Underhill. Nor does it face imminent extinction in Westford, Cambridge, Fairfax or St. Albans.

Rural Vermont towns, so often the pioneers of self-sufficiency, are simmering on the backburner of broadband.

A rolling boil is still months away.
