A few years a ago, I ran into then-FCC chairman Michael Powell at Jesse Jackson's Wall Street Project Conference in New York. Powell was the man of the hour. More than 3 million people had contacted the Federal Communications Commission to demand that it abandon plans to allow big media conglomerates such as Clear Channel to further consolidate media ownership.
