Hawaii's public media -- including PBS Hawaii, KHPR, KKCR, Olelo and Pacific Islanders in Communications -- are separate organizations from the state, and receive no direct support. For the stations, this situation does not have them benefiting from state funds, but does keep the organizations somewhat immune to current state budget troubles and subsequently faring much better than a number of mainland states.
