A bill that would make it easier for telephone companies to compete against cable TV providers in some Louisiana television markets squeaked through a Senate committee and heads to the full Senate for debate.

Local governments oppose the bill, saying it would usurp their authority to regulate the industry. The House has already approved the measure.
