Work Exchange

We've reached our volunteer capacity and we are no longer accepting applications. Thanks for your interest and support.

Free Press is now reviewing applications and eligible applicants will be accepted into the work-exchange program on a first-come, first-served basis.  We will be accepting approximately 60 volunteers for the event.

Timeline:
March 18 - April 16, 2008: Applications accepted on a rolling basis
May 5, 2008: All volunteers will be notified of acceptance

Volunteer Tasks

Volunteers in the work-exchange program will perform a variety of tasks at the conference, including but not limited to:
  • Setup (stuffing registration packets, setting up rooms, carrying boxes, running errands, etc.)
  • Staffing general information booths/tables
  • Staffing registration tables
  • Serving as session room monitors (straightening chairs, assisting speakers, passing the microphone during Q&A, collecting evaluations, troubleshooting A/V equipment)
  • Serving as hall monitors between and after sessions (providing directions, guarding equipment); cleaning up (stacking tables, chairs, trash pickup/removal, sign removal, etc.); assisting attendees with special requests (e.g., serving as a guide for a blind attendee, translating from English to Spanish, etc.)

Special Skills
Work exchange participants who are able to contribute specialized skills such as sign-language interpretation and foreign-language translation are especially needed for the conference.  If you have these skills, please make sure to indicate them in the appropriate area below.

Commitment & Eligibility
Free Press is seeking individuals to help with event-related work on-site in Minneapolis during the conference as well as immediately before and after the conference.
You should submit an application only if you can:
  • Commit to working a minimum of 8 hours in two scheduled four-hour shifts between Wednesday, June 4, and Sunday, June 8 (to be assigned by Free Press).
  • Attend the mandatory orientation and training session to be held in Minneapolis on the evening of Tuesday, June 3.
Free Press cannot guarantee particular work shift assignments, although we will do our best to accommodate your preferences. We will notify you of your shift times upon approving your application and will give you your task assignment at the orientation and training session.  Work-exchange volunteers must be available to work assigned shifts. Work-exchange positions are not transferable.

Registration Fee Waivers
Work-exchange volunteers will receive a registration fee waiver so that they may attend conference sessions during times they are not working.  They will also receive a conference packet (containing the conference materials, giveaways and name badge), and will be provided with light refreshments and a hospitality room. Work exchangers will not be paid for their time, and must pay for their own travel, lodging, parking, and meal expenses.
